Review: Digital Days of Deferred Writing Projects from 19th to 21st September 2022

Over three days in September, ISL staff tried out a new format: During the Digital Days of Deferred Writing Projects, students were invited to write on their current projects from home in a structured way. The event met with great interest: Around 70 students and doctoral candidates from all disciplines registered for the event.
The concept was that participants use the morning for concentrated work: In two break-out sessions, the participants wrote either with the help of the Pomodoro® technique or within a digital writing environment that structures the work-phase through various impulses. In short online workshops at lunchtime, the participants could deepen their knowledge and try out new techniques right away. In addition to the classic topics of planning and time management and strategies against procrastination (many thanks to the PSB for their input on this!), there was a new topic this time: Since AI-based tools for academic work and writing are a topic of heated discussions in higher education and writing didactics, a short workshop was dedicated to this matter. The workshop participants got to know various browser-based, free tools for translation, paraphrasing and stylistic checking, and they dealt with the use and the benefits of these tools in both practical and critical-reflexive way.
In the afternoon, there was an opportunity for the online writing consultation, which was gratefully received by many students.
Due to the success, it is planned to repeat the Digital Days in a somewhat shorter form on March 2 and 3, 2023 – as a replacement for the Long Night of Deferred Term Papers, which has since been cancelled for capacity reasons.
