Double degree programme with the University of Clermont Auvergne


The two-year English-language double degree Master's programme in Development Economics is jointly offered by the University of Clermont Auvergne (UCA) in Clermont-Ferrand and the University of Göttingen. Both universities are leading European universities in the field of development economics.


The programme offers you the opportunity to earn both a Master of Science (MSc) in Development Economics from the University of Göttingen, and a Master mention Economie du Développement offered by the University of Clermont Auvergne Ecole d’Economie (School of Economics). Both programmes are taught in English.


The double degree programme is an excellent opportunity to study abroad, and offers graduates excellent career opportunities in multinational companies, national and international organizations, and last but not least, the ability of applying for international PhD programmes.

  • What is a double degree programme?



    A double degree programme is an integrated international course of study that takes place partly at a German institute of higher education and partly at an international partner university. In a double degree programme, national degrees from both partner universities are awarded, as opposed to a single joint-degree from both partner universities.


    Students of the University of Göttingen, who participate in the double degree programme, complete first, third and fourth semester in Göttingen and the second semester in Clermont-Ferrand.


    Once you finished your coursework and thesis you will be awarded two individual degree certificates which both state that you acquired them within the framework of a double degree.







  • Application for the double degree programme



    A prerequisite for participation in the double degree programme is acceptance to the Master's programme in development economics.


    Students will apply to the university where they intend to spend the first semester.


    As a student of the University of Göttingen, application for the double degree programme is always possible for the winter semester.


    The application period is



    • October 1 through November 15 of the previous calender year for citizens from non-EU/non-EEA countries and no bachelor’s degree from EU/EAA country and

    • April 1 through May 15 of the same calendar year for citizens from the EU/EEA or for applicants with a bachelor’s degree from an EU/EAA country.


    After your successful application you will then start studying in Göttingen in October (winter semester).


    You apply to the Master's programme in Development Economics and to the double degree programme with the University of Clermont Auvergne. The application for the double degree programme is part of the application form for the Master of Science in Development Economics.


    Please note: You must meet both the application requirements for the MSc in Development Economics and for the double degree programme with the University of Clermont Auvergne (undergraduate degree and undergraduate thesis being graded no lower than 2.5).

  • Programme structure of the double degree programme



    Students of the University of Göttingen, who participate in the double degree programme, complete the first and third semester in Göttingen and the second semester in Clermont-Ferrand.


    Achievements totaling at least 120 credits must be successfully completed in accordance with the examination and study regulations for the MSc in Development Economics [in German]


    Curriculum for students from the University of Göttingen


    Semesters 1 and 3


    In the first and third semester, you study in Göttingen, where you complete required courses for the MSc in Development Economics (60 credits) according to the following requirements:



    • Mandatory courses (12 C)

    • Compulsory elective courses (6 C)

    • Subject-specific specialization (6 C)

    • Seminars (6 C)

    • Electives (30 C)


    Second semester:


    In the second semester (February to June), a total of 30 credits must be completed at the University of Clermont Auvergne in accordance with its examination regulations.



    • Compulsory courses (30 C)


    Master's thesis (30 credits)


    The Master’s thesis can be written either at the University of Göttingen or at the University of Clermont Auvergne. By the successful completion of the Master's thesis 30 credits are earned.

    The University of Clermont Auvergne (UCA) is one of the leading European universities in the field of development economics and plays a pioneering role in the European research landscape, in particular through the close cooperation of the Université Clermont Auvergne (UCA) with the renowned local research institute CERDI (Centre d'Études et de Recherches sur le Développement International).


    As a participant in the double degree programme, you will therefore benefit from an expanded range of courses and new opportunities for individual focus, especially in the area of sustainability and the environment. For example, modules such as "Sustainable Development Economics II", "Topics on Development and Growth" and "Development Microeconomics" are offered.


    Particularly against the backdrop of advancing climate change and the immense environmental challenges in many developing countries, the modules offered in Clermont-Ferrand will allow you to expand your competencies in this important area and to set new priorities in your studies.


    In addition to gaining new knowledge in the area of sustainability and the environment, you will also acquire important intercultural skills through your one semester of study at an international university abroad. Such soft skills have become increasingly important in the working world in recent years and are therefore an important addition to the content education of our faculty.
