Networks pose an important career factor in Academia. Your achievements and the results of your endeavors do not speak for themselves - you have to draw attention to them in an appropriate way. Networking will help you to realize your professional goals, to successfully establish and develop collaborations - or to help other people. And you can do it online or face to face.
This course consists of three elements:
1) a preparatory self-study-phase to reflect on the status quo of your network,
2) an interactive workshop regarding the capacity of your relations and potential enhancements, and
3) optional coachings for customized counselling.
You will be enabled to

  • analyze your existing network for options to enhance it
  • define what you can bring into a network (compile a competence profile)
  • develop a strategy for networking, targeting your individual goals
  • use communication techniques for successful networking
  • design an action plan to transfer learning outcomes

1) Self-study-phase: You will get access to a moodle course room. In this course room you will find materials and tasks to prepare. If necessary, these tasks are supervised by the trainer.

2) Workshop: In the workshop we will analyze your actual network using a visualization based on Granovetters concept of strong and weak ties and look for options to broaden and grow it, focusing on your goals. We will practice the necessary communication skills (e.g. compassionate talk) for networking and cover related topics.

3) Transfer phase (optional): The trainer is offering short individual coaching sessions for specific questions and guidance after the workshop.

Overall, the course focuses on the following topics:

  • analyze your network
  • your goals for networking
  • how to enhance your network
  • strategy for networking
  • communication for networking

  • Self-study phase before the workshop: preparation of approx. 2 hours, on your own (prerequisite for further participation)
  • Active participation in the workshop: On the attendance date, we will work together on interactive learning situations.
  • Transfer phase: Participation in an individual coaching session is voluntary and time slots are limited. Please indicate your demand in the registration request! The trainer will contact you for appointment arrangement. In case of vacancies, you will also have the chance to register for a free slot right after the workshop via e-mail.
