Teaching is a key component of the Jean Monnet Chair's activities. The Chair develops new seminars and lectures, which are offered to students of different academic levels and backgrounds. The aim is to integrate European legal studies and sustainability as key dimensions into the curriculum and to promote interest for the European Union and sustainable development.

SEMINAR
EU Trade and Investment for Sustainable Development
The seminar deals with recent EU international trade and investment agreements and trade policy initiatives. It will focus on how these agreements and initiatives aim at promoting sustainable development in a global perspective. Inter alia, the EU agreements with Canada, China, Japan and Singapore are analysed. Also, EU initiatives to prevent deforestation and to address carbon leakage are discussed.

European Citizen's Initiative: A tool for engagement and active citizenship - ECI from A to Z
The Jean Monnet Chair has joined the universities of Coimbra (Portugal), Vigo (Spain), and Iasi (Romania) to conduct the new interactive project "European Citizen's Initiative: A tool for engagement and active citizenship". The project with the short title "ECI from A to Z" aims to promote civic engagement and voluntary participation and to model a European Citizens' Initiative's procedure before the European Commission. 20 students from Göttingen University participate in online training activities and a transnational simulation of the European Citizens' Initiative.

EU external action is a more recent area of teaching and legal research. This lecture explores, how „foreign affairs“ of the EU are managed, who does so, within what EU and international law framework and what this tells us about the EU and its character.

Cases & Developments in International Economic Law and Sustainable Development
The course provides an overview on general as well as contemporary developments in international economic law and sustainable development. A particular focus is put on the highly debated legal regime of international investment law. Additionally, international trade law, in particular the law of the WTO, and its recent developments and challenges are covered. The lecture examines the EU’s role as an international actor and the EU’s relevance in the fostering of global sustainable development in its external relations. Throughout the course, selected cases are discussed. These cases do not only cover some of the "classics", but also recent judicature in international economic and sustainability law. E-Learning courses are integrated.

This lecture looks at the concepts and principles in environmental law on both international and European level. On the basis of the fundamentals and history of environmental law and the idea of sustainable development, the lecture focuses on climate change and biodiversity as key areas of environmental law, as well as on the interplay between environmental protection, human rights and trade and investment.

This lecture gives an overview of the institutional and substantive law of the European Union. It looks at the historical development of the European integration, the legal nature of the EU, the allocation of competence between the EU and member states, the EU organs, the structure of EU law and legal protection mechanisms. In addition, the lecture provides an introduction of the European freedoms, the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the Convention on Human Rights. The lecture is held in German.

Seminar on the "European Green Deal"
The new European Commission has recently announced a “European Green Deal”. It aims at making the EU climate-neutral by 2050, protecting natural habitats, unlocking economic growth and promoting employment by way of an inclusive transition. The seminar will address the legal aspects of this ambitious project, including EU and international dimensions. Relevant legal issues are EU and international climate change law, EU law on emission control and nature protection, the UN sustainable development goals, sustainable development in German, European and international law and EU international trade agreements.

The seminar focuses on the Brexit and its current developments. On 31 January 2020, the United Kingdom has left the European Union. The seminar will address the legal consequences, analyze the so-called Withdrawal Agreement and discuss current developments, particularly the negotiations on an agreement on the future relations.

Current Developments in International Economic Law and the EU WTO-Trade Agreements - Investment Law - Sustainable Development - China
This seminar for advanced students addresses a number of current developments in international economic law, such as the Multilateral Investment Court and the UNCITRAL process, the future of WTO dispute settlement and recent EU trade agreements.
In addition, the role of the People’s Republic of China in the world economy is analysed. The seminar takes place in Brussels.

Sustainable Development and sustainability reporting
Sustainable development is one of the key principles of environmental, economic and social policies at international, European and national levels. While introduced already some time ago, the meaning and the implications of the principle are still in need for clarification. Beyond exploring the evolution, concept and legal relevance of the principle in general terms the seminar will address the role, that sustainable development plays in legislative and administrative assessments and newer forms of reporting of enterprises.

World Economy in Unsettled Times and the Role of the European Union
US tariff measures, retaliatory action by the PR China and the European Union, the use to the national security exemption and the blockade of the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organisation put the system of the world economy to the test. The seminar, which will be fully conducted in English will address relevant questions of international economic law, including historical perspectives, assess the systemic stability of the system and discuss options to move forward, taking into account the specific perspective of the European Union.
