Research

Our research focuses on membrane-confined processes. To understand these processes at the molecular level, we use a bottom-up approach with model membrane systems, primarily supported lipid bilayers from spreading vesicles like giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) and giant plasma membrane vesicles (GPMVs) from eukaryotic cells. Furthermore, we are recognized for developing pore-spanning membranes on highly ordered pore arrays. These membranes, derived from GUVs or GPMVs, suspend nanometer- to micrometer-sized pores in an aluminum or silicon substrate, separating two aqueous compartments and serving as an intermediate between supported and freestanding membranes.
