The Faculty of Theology was founded when the political climate and situation changed so that the acceptance of a more universal vision of the university was possible. After 1989 state universities in Poland became more open to the thought and research inspired by the Christian heritage.

On October 1, 1996 a new specialisation of Christian Education was offered in the Institute of Education at NCU and a year later, a new Department of Christian Education was established. The head of the specialisation and the department was Rev. Prof. Jerzy Bagrowicz, a professor of Catechetics from the Seminary in Wloclawek, an organiser and the first dean of the Faculty of Theology at NCU. This decision was an important element of opening the university for the presence of the Church in debates and academic research inspired by the Christian spirit and prepared academic community for the creation of the Faculty of Theology.

The Faculty of Theology relied on the existing circles of theologians, mostly academics from the Diocesan Seminaries in Torun and Wloclawek and later from Pelpin.

John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin

Outgoing über Erasmus+
(required level of language proficiency: Englisch B2)

The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) has made it its mission to conduct research in harmony between science and faith. The strong link to the Christian faith and the Church has made the university a special community of professors and students united in their joy of seeking the truth. The priorities of the KUL are research and education on the highest level, combined with educating young people with regard to moral values.

The Theological Faculty of the KUL consists of eleven academical institutes, two inter-faculty institutes, and 40 chairs. One of those institutes is the Institute of Biblical Studies, which is an integral part of the faculty. The scholars of the institute work in the fields of the Old and New Testament, Second Temple literature and Semitic languages. Their goal is to deepen and to further the knowledge of the Bible on a scientific level. The study programme at the faculty therefore contains numerous Bible courses offered by members of the Institute of Biblical Studies. In their mission to deepen the scientific understanding of the Bible, the institute‘s scholars use a wide range of methods for their research (historical-critical, narrative, and historical exegesis). They also engage in the translation of targumic texts, a unique program pioneered by the institute, as well as in translating Qumran writings.

The scholars of the Faculty of Theology at the KUL engage in international dialogue with other theologians. They have been taking part in numerous academic conventions and symposia, for example in Italy, Germany, the USA, the UK, Switzerland or France, and the faculty also maintains relationships with many universities and institutions outside of Poland, the Maria Assunta University in Rome and the Konfessionskundliches Institut des Evangelisches Bundes in Bensheim are only two examples of many.
