Faculty scientist honored with German Medical Award
The award goes to Dr. Muhammad Jawad Noon for his research on therapy of short bowel syndromes
Dr. Muhammad Jawad Noon has received the German Medical Award. The prize is awarded to clinics, doctors, practices, researchers and companies that have made a special contribution to improving patient care through medical innovation and is the leading medical prize in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Muhammad Jawad Noon is a research associate at the Chair of Development Economics / Centre for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS) of Prof. Dr. Sebastian Vollmer at the Faculty of Business and Economics of Göttingen University. He received the award in the "Academic" category for his research on the therapy of short bowel syndrome. Short bowel syndrome refers to a condition caused by the surgical removal or congenital absence of large parts of the intestine. The award ceremony took place on 16 November 2021 during the "MEDICA" trade fair in Düsseldorf.
Noon’s publication demonstrates, that oral rehydration therapy and feeding can replace total parenteral nutrition in patients with short bowel syndrome, thus free the patient from dependence on intravenous nutrition and allows a transition from hospital to home. Dr. Noon studied medicine in Pakistan, followed by a Masters in Evidence Based Intervention and Policy Evaluation at Oxford University in England. In Göttingen, his work focuses on health econometrics.
