WirtschaftsWoche ranking of the strongest research universities in economics 2023 - Göttingen's economics department in the top ten

In the 2023 ranking of the universities with the strongest research in economics in German-speaking countries, the University of Göttingen ranks 10th - if only universities in Germany are considered, Göttingen comes in 5th place. The ranking was recently published in the business magazine "WirtschaftsWoche".

The research performance of individual academics is also analysed (in the five-year period from 2019 to 2023). In the ranking of the economists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland with the highest research output, Prof. Dr Holger Strulik is in 19th place, while in the ranking of overall research output ("lifetime achievement") he is in 26th place. Prof. Strulik holds the Chair of Macroeconomics and Development Economics at the Faculty of Business and Economics.

The rankings are compiled by the KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich on behalf of WirtschaftsWoche. Publications from 2014 to 2023 were analysed and evaluated for the university ranking. The evaluation is based on publications by economists (including postdocs and junior professors) at Chairs, Fraunhofer and Max Planck Institutes who conduct research in German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) or who come from these countries and work abroad. The KOF economists analysed more than 1800 economics journals and assigned a score for each publication, weighted according to the journal's reputation.
