The Faculty of Geoscience and Geography at the University of Göttingen invites applications for a temporary professorship with civil servant status (grade W2 NBesO) with tenure track (grade W3 NBesO) effective at the earliest possible date:

W2 Professorship with tenure track to W3 in Mineral Resources (all genders welcome)

The successful candidate will initially be appointed for a period of five years. Transfer to a permanent professorship (W3) shall take place after a positive evaluation without the position being readvertised.

The professorship will represent the field of genesis and use of mineral resources in research and teaching in a wide range of disciplines and deals with the area of critical economically and environmentally relevant mineral and raw materials (including precious metals, rare earths) from a geoscientific perspective. The focus of the professorship should be on application-oriented basic research and generating an understanding of complex geoscientific process structures. This topic also includes consideration of the sustainable use of raw materials, such as aspects of recycling, i.e. the possible routes of mineral raw materials after their first use. This provides a strong connection to the faculty’s research focus on “Georesources and Sustainability”. A connection to one or both of the other focal areas, “Geological Archives” and “Early Earth”, is desirable.

We are looking for a committed internationally visible, innovative, communicative and team-oriented person who works across traditional subject boundaries, actively seeks collaborations and contributes to professional networking within and outside the faculty. The focus of their work is on the fundamental understanding of the formation of deposits of extractable mineral raw materials in a geological-petrological-geochemical context, the assessment of the availability and economic viability of the extraction of mineral raw materials on a regional and global scale, as well as the consideration of the scientific-technical and ecological-social challenges associated with extraction. The handling of large datasets, numerical modelling, excellent laboratory analytics as well as field investigations and experiments are part of the candidate’s expertise and research projects. Our faculty provides excellent analytical equipment, a wide range of modern geo-scientific and geo-graphical research directions with numerous opportunities for cooperation, as well as collegial, open and uncomplicated cooperation.

Appointment requirements are stipulated by Article 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act in the most current version of that law. As a rule, junior professors and other members of the University of Göttingen can only be considered for a professorial appointment if after the completion of the doctoral thesis they have transferred to another university or worked for a minimum of two years in research elsewhere. The University of Göttingen is a Public Law Foundation and thereby entitled to award professorships. Details will be provided upon request.
