„The Power of Cooperation”: A New Funding Initiative from the University of Göttingen

The University of Göttingen is launching a strategic funding initiative to strengthen its international influence and research excellence. The project “The Power of Cooperation” is funded as part of the zukunft.niedersachsen program “Strategical Development of Potential” and follows a clear guiding principle: collaboration as the key to scientific excellence.

Project Framework

The five-year project has a budget of 15 million euros. The project aims to position the university as an internationally recognized comprehensive university.

Three Strategic Pillars

The initiative rests on three pillars:

1.      Five Campus Research Alliances: Structured research networks to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration

2.      GöttingenConnect: Platform for intensifying research collaboration and knowledge transfer

3.      Support for Early-Career Researchers: Targeted support for researchers in the early stages of their careers

Kick-off and First Steps

The kick-off workshop took place on June 30, 2026, in the Alte Mensa. More than 80 participants—including researchers, staff from central and faculty administrations, and members of the Senate—discussed the strategic opportunities, implementation steps, and monitoring of the initiative.

Prof. Dr. Brümmer, Vice President for Research and Sustainability, presented the project and emphasized:

„PSE funding is of central importance to the university’s future development. It underscores the institution’s commitment to collaborative cutting-edge research and excellent career development.“

Responsibility and Contact Information

Strategic responsibility lies with the Vice President for Research and Sustainability.

Operational project coordination is handled by the Research and Transfer Services.

The Power of Cooperation is funded by zukunft.niedersachsen, the joint research funding program of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture and the Volkswagen Foundation.
