During the warm season, magnificent palms, oleanders, hibiscus, angel’s trumpets, and other container plants adorn the area in front of the Orangery and around the greenhouses. Many of these plants take until late summer to reach their full splendor. It’s almost easy to forget that they aren’t hardy and will have to be moved back into the greenhouses in a few weeks, where—pruned and rather cramped—they’ll spend their winter dormancy protected from frost. Make the most of this time and enjoy the last sunny days before the big fall cleanup begins again soon. A big round of applause for our gardeners, who conjure up such Mediterranean splendor in the heart of Göttingen every summer!

Lantana
Our magnificent lantanas in the container garden are impossible to miss right now. The flower heads bloom from the outside in, and each individual flower first blooms yellow before changing color (or “transforming”), so that the flower heads are two-toned. Lantana is native to Central America and is therefore not hardy. Its nectar is very popular with butterflies, and we often even see hummingbird hawk-moths on our lantanas, flitting in front of the flowers like little hummingbirds as they feed on the nectar.

Outdoors, many plants have finished blooming, and everywhere you look, you see capsules, pods, husks, or the “dandelion-like” flower heads of the Asteraceae family with their airborne seeds.
