The German Chapter of the Academic Society of Competition Law (ASCOLA) will hold its second annual conference on 26 November 2026 at the University of Göttingen in a hybrid format.The first part of the conference will discuss current developments and emerging trends in merger control. Particular focus will be placed on the forthcoming 12th amendment to the German Act against Restraints of Competition (GWB), the European Commission’s new merger control guidelines, and the new US Merger Guidelines. The session on the 12th GWB amendment will also include an in-depth discussion of the governance and institutional structure of the Bundeskartellamt(Federal Cartel Office) , considered from both the perspective of the Monopolies Commission and a public law perspective. The second part of the conference will focus on legal scholarship and academic career paths in business and competition law. A panel discussion will explore different academic career paths and models in Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as the opportunities offered by the Habilitation(postdoctoral qualification) and postdoctoral positions. This will be followed by a discussion of how legal scholarship is perceived in practice, particularly in competition law, from the perspectives of the General Court of the European Union and the German Federal Court of Justice (BGH).
