Research Focus

The central research objective of the BCCN Göttingen is to understand the cooperative dynamics of neuronal systems on different hierarchical levels of nervous system organization, from cellular function, through sensory systems, to cognition and behavioral control by addressing four fundamental questions:

  • How do supramolecular complexes and interacting intracellular structures contribute to adaptive single neuron computation?
  • How do the collective dynamics of biological neural networks drive processes of adaptive coding and learning?
  • How do dynamical interactions within sets of brain areas mediate the flexible use of neuronal processing resources and strategies?
  • How can the interaction between neuronal motor control and high-dimensional movement kinematics generate smooth, precise, and effective movements?

  • To answer these questions, dynamical systems approaches and complex system theories are applied to elucidate how biological instantiations of cooperative dynamics lead to adaptive information processing.
