Universities for Goal 13 2nd Edition

The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Siemens Gamesa want to promote university talent in the fight against climate change (SDG 13). As part of the international "Universities for SDG 13 Award" competition, students from selected universities are to work across disciplines to develop groundbreaking solutions for the energy transition and environmental sustainability. For the second edition of this award, the University of Goettingen was selected as one of seven universities whose students can apply. The other nominated universities are: Tsinghua University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong in China, University of Pretoria and Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, Pontifical University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Arizona State University in the USA.

Throughout the competition, students will be supported by faculty and mentors from Siemens Gamesa and SDSN. The projects require a multidisciplinary approach that is essential to the transition to a carbon-free economy, taking into account technological, legal, economic and social aspects.

The winning solution will be awarded in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and will be rewarded with USD 10,000 in prize money for further development and implementation.

In the first phase, students from the University of Göttingen could submit their ideas to our local coordinator, Prof. Sebastian Vollmer (sebastian.vollmer@wiwi.uni-goettingen.de), until 15 March 2023. Students should think about a problem related to the Sustainable Development Goals that they would like to tackle. This can be an issue of local, regional or global importance. Importantly, it can later be applied to other contexts with the same problem.
