Internationally recognised tests

Applicants whose mother tongue is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Proof of very good proficiency in English must be provided in the form of standardised or accredited certificates. These should be at least at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe (CEFR):

a) UNIcert®: at least UNIcert® III certificate;
b) NULTE certificates: minimum level C1;
c) Cambridge English Scale: at least 180 points;
d) IELTS: At last Band 7.0, whereas the level for the competences Reading and Writing must not be below 6.5 in each case.
e) "Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test" (TOEFL iBT): at least 93 points;
f) Global Scale of English (Pearson Academic): at least 76 points.
g) other quality-assured certificate at level C1 of the GeR.

Successful completion of a test (a-f) must not be more than two years prior to the date of your application for admission.

Proof of very good proficiency in the English language can also be provided by

a. successfully completing a course of study in which English proficiency at CEFR level C1 or higher is specified as an accredited competence objective in the Diploma Supplement within the last two years prior to the date of your application for admission or

b. at least four years of English-language secondary school education (including secondary level) together with a relevant Bachelor's degree course in English, both of which were completed in a country in which English is a national language. Suitable evidence includes school reports, curricular regulations and confirmations from the school management, faculty or rectorate of the university. The Bachelor's degree must not be older than two years on application. Applicants who have resided permanently in a predominantly English-speaking country since completing their Bachelor's degree (Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States of America incl. Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom of Great Britain incl. Northern Ireland) are exempt from the time restriction. The selection committee may grant exceptions to the two-year deadline if applicants can provide evidence of continuous language contact at a high academic level in the meantime.

Proof of very good proficiency in the English language must be provided to the Faculty of Philosophy by 30.09. when enrolling for a winter semester and by 31.03. when enrolling for a summer semester; this proof is a prerequisite for enrolment; conditional enrolment does not take place.
