Details | An analogue of the prime number theorem for polynomials over finite fields was formulated and proven by Gauss in one of the unpublished chapters of the Disquisitiones. This “prime polynomial theorem” can be seen as counting orbit lengths for the Frobenius map acting on the additive group. We will investigate whether there is such a statement for a general endomorphism of a general algebraic group, where algebraic analogues of concepts from topological dynamics start to appear.
