Press release: DFG Funding Atlas: Göttingen University in 15th place in Germany

No. 186 - 27.11.2024

Another good ranking and top ratings in life sciences

The University of Göttingen is one of the 15 best universities in Germany according to the DFG Funding Atlas 2024. From 2020 to 2022, it acquired a total of 232.5 million euros in research funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG). The life sciences were once again particularly successful, taking fifth place in Germany. The subjects with the highest DFG ratings at the University of Göttingen include Agricultural Sciences, Forest Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine, which once again take first place. Biology at the University of Göttingen ranks fifth in Germany. The DFG Funding Atlas is regarded as the most important ranking for universities in Germany.

‘For the fourth time in a row, Agricultural Sciences, Forest Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Göttingen have been able to acquire by far the most DFG funding in Germany,’ said Professor Bernard Brümmer, Vice-President for Research and Sustainability at the University of Göttingen. ‘This underlines the consistently high quality of our research and the enormous commitment of our scientists in these subjects. Now, it is important to achieve this success in all the interconnected research areas in the University's other core subjects as well.’

The life sciences in Göttingen are extremely attractive for international researchers: in the list of researchers supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the University of Göttingen is the most frequently chosen university in Germany. In the list of universities most often chosen for research stays by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation fellows, the University of Göttingen ranks fifth.

The DFG Funding Atlas 2024 is the tenth time that the DFG have published these key research indicators. Over the period of more than 30 years covered, the University of Göttingen has an average ranking of ninth place in Germany.
