Press release: Göttingen University Senate elects interim president

No. 20 - 05.02.2025

Professor Axel Schölmerich unanimously elected – to take office as soon as possible

At its special meeting today, the Senate of the University of Göttingen unanimously voted in favour of Professor Axel Schölmerich being appointed as interim president at the earliest opportunity. This is to bridge the gap until a new president takes up office. The University Foundation Committee still has to confirm the proposal.

Axel Schölmerich, born 1952, was rector of the Ruhr University Bochum from 2015 to 2021. He was appointed as a professor of psychology in Bochum in 1997, having previously spent five years at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, US, and two years at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. His main research interest is the social and emotional development of children in different cultural contexts. During his career, he has been involved in academic management in various roles.
