Social and Cultural Anthropology (M.A.)
Features
The Master's programme in Social and Cultural Anthropology imparts the necessary specialist knowledge and methodological know-how to adequately grasp and analyse the multi-layered processes of social and cultural change in the current, globally networked world. The focus is on the major regions of Asia-Pacific (especially Southeast Asia and Oceania) and Africa with their respective specific problems and challenges. A profiling area allows students to choose from three subject areas and thus set their own content-related focal points.

Details
The aim of the Master's programme is to acquire in-depth scientific knowledge and the ability to independently apply social and cultural anthropological theories and methods to specific social problems, especially in the Institute's priority regions. In addition to a compulsory core study area, a profiling area offers the possibility to choose from 3 subject areas and thus give the degree programme its own profile:
- Subject area I: Materiality and Environment
- Subject area II: Mobility and Identity
- Subject area III: Knowledge and Religion
The central element of the programme is the intensively supervised planning, preparation and implementation of an ethnological research or internship project in one of the three profile-forming subject areas. It is recommended that the project be located in a priority region of the institute (Asia-Pacific or Africa) and thus experience research work across linguistic and cultural borders. Integration into existing research structures of the Institute of Ethnology or the Ethnological Collection is possible; the Institute's many collaborations with universities and research institutions in the priority countries can also be used here.
The degree programme qualifies students by imparting subject-specific knowledge and methodological-analytical skills relevant to the professional field, especially in questions of cultural contact and cultural transfer, cultural exchange and development cooperation, and creates the academic basis for further studies in a doctoral programme. Possible fields of activity in public and private institutions are:
- Science and (international) science management
- Museum and exhibition management
- Cultural exchange and international cultural promotion
- Counselling and mediation (e.g. migration and refugee work, development cooperation, humanitarian aid, health care, tourism, international business)
- Media, public relations, adult education (especially for cultural and global contexts)
