W3 Professorship in Plant Breeding Methodology

Institution: Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Crop Sciences
Date of Announcement (dd.mm.yyyy): 30.11.2023
Application Deadline (dd.mm.yyyy): 03.03.2024

The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Crop Sciences, at the University of Göttingen is seeking to fill a permanent professorship with civil servant status (grade W3 NBesO) at the earliest possible date:

W3 Professorship in Plant Breeding Methodology (f/m/d)

The future holder of the position should be able to assess plant breeding and its role in plant production and in the agricultural system in its entirety. Thus, the professorship should provide an overall view of the breeding approach and the use of classical and modern techniques and methods in plant breeding. The methodological orientation should preferably focus on quantitative genetics and selection theory. The combination of classical phenotype-based breeding with molecular genetic methods and/or high-throughput phenotyping as well as the use and further development of field trials is desired.

Against this background, the professorship should ideally deal with breeding objectives in the areas of resource efficiency, stress tolerance, pathogen resistance and yield stability, among others, and thus contribute to the transformation of the agricultural economy towards sustainable and climate-neutral management in line with the profile-forming research foci of the University of Göttingen.

We are looking for a team player and dedicated person with international publications, teaching experience and visibility commensurate with the career level. The willingness to cooperate with scientists within the faculty, but also with partners from neighboring faculties of the University of Göttingen and beyond in the context of DFG collaborative research or comparable formats is expected. In particular, active collaboration in the Center for Integrated Breeding Research (CiBreed) and the use of resulting synergies is expected.

In teaching, the professorship is integrated in the Master’s program “Integrated Plant and Animal Breeding” and in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in agricultural sciences (majors crop science and resource management) as well as in the doctoral program of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. Teaching should be possible in German and English (if necessary, after a training period). The University attaches great importance to research-oriented teaching.

Appointment requirements are laid down in § 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act in the currently valid version. In the case of an appointment to a professorship, junior professors and other members of the University of Göttingen can, as a rule, only be considered for an appointment if they have changed their university after obtaining their doctorate, or have worked scientifically for at least two years outside the appointing university. As a Public Law Foundation, the University of Göttingen holds the right of appointment. Details will be provided upon request.

Applications from scientists from abroad are explicitly welcome. The University of Göttingen strives to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and therefore explicitly invites qualified female scientists to apply. The University has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports its employees in balancing work and family life. The University is particularly committed to the professional participation of disabled employees and therefore welcomes applications from persons with disabilities. In the case of equivalent qualifications, applications from disabled persons will be given preference. In order for the University to be able to protect the interests of the applicant, information about a disability or equal status should already be included in the application.

Candidates are invited to send their applications in English containing a curriculum vitae, certificates and transcripts, a publication list, a record of teaching experience, a meaningful research and teaching perspective, and a list of successfully acquired third-party funding no later than March 3, 2024 to the Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (Prof. Dr. Stephan von Cramon-Taubadel) via the online application portal: https://lotus2.gwdg.de/uni/uafb/w3_PlantBreeding_2023.nsf/bewerbung.

If you have further questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Stefan Scholten (stefan.scholten@uni-goettingen.de).
