W2 Professorship in Classical Philology / Greek Studies

Institution: Faculty of Humanities, Department of Classical Philology
Date of Announcement: 09.01.2025
Application Deadline: 20.02.2025

The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Göttingen invites applications for a permanent professorship with civil servant status (grade W2 NBesO) at the Department of Classical Philology as of October 1, 2026:

W2 Professorship in Classical Philology / Greek Studies (f/m/d)

The successful candidate will represent the full range of Greek Studies in research and teaching. We are looking for a team-oriented and committed colleague who can demonstrate expertise in two clearly distinct focus areas. In addition to the literary epochs of the imperial age and late antiquity, which are firmly established both at the Department and the Faculty, and - with a perspective on the potential for interdisciplinary collaborative research - a strong emphasis on the literature of the 8th-1st centuries BCE (from Homer to late Hellenism) is particularly welcome. The Faculty of Humanities explicitly welcomes teaching and research approaches that include considerations of gender.

Proven expertise in contemporary research tools and practices, such as text-based or language-based basic research techniques and/or basic research methodology in literary and cultural studies is desired alongside a readiness to embrace digital technologies. International visibility (e.g. via relevant networks, research collaborations or stays abroad) is an asset. Compatibility with the prioritised fields of research in the minor subjects in Göttingen (in particular Religion/Mythology and the Old World) is welcome.

The postholder will be expected to participate in academic self-governance, as well as in the existing interdisciplinary study programmes, in particular on Ancient Cultures and World Literature. The University of Göttingen attaches importance to research-oriented teaching. The University plans to potentially include this professorship in the Women Professors’ Programme of the Federal Government and the Länder.

The Department of Classical Philology has a training programme for teachers of Ancient Greek as a school subject, and the successful candidate will be expected to shape the teacher training courses in accordance with the curricular requirements of the state of Lower Saxony. The postholder will moreover be expected to intensify and strengthen contacts with schools and educators in Göttingen and the surrounding area.

Appointment requirements are stipulated by Article 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act in the most current version of that law. As a rule, junior professors and other members of the University of Göttingen can only be considered for a professorial appointment if after the completion of the doctoral thesis they have transferred to another university or worked for a minimum of two years in research elsewhere. The University of Göttingen is a Public Law Foundation and thereby entitled to award professorships. Details will be provided upon request.

Applications from abroad are explicitly welcome. Sufficient command of the German language is a prerequisite. The University of Göttingen strives to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and therefore explicitly invites qualified female scholars to apply. The University has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports its employees in balancing work and family life. The University is particularly committed to the professional participation of disabled employees and therefore welcomes applications from persons with disabilities. In the case of equivalent qualifications, applications from disabled persons will be given preference. In order for the University to be able to protect the interests of the applicant, information about a disability or equal status should be included in the application.

Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a description of the scientific career including teaching activities and a list of publications, as well as a five-page research and teaching concept. Please address your application to the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Göttingen, Humboldtallee 17, 37073 Göttingen, and send it in PDF format to bewerbungen.philfak@phil.uni-goettingen.de by February 20, 2025.
