Agreeing teaching objectives with the faculties

A quality improvement tool

The University of Göttingen regards good study conditions and maintaining high quality in teaching as indispensable to its continued development. As a contribution to the process of establishing and developing quality control cycles, agreement on objectives in teaching is an important tool to stimulate the implementation and development of a process of quality improvement within the faculties. Moreover it can aid the partners concerned to create transparency, commitment and responsibility in the areas of teaching and learning.

For some years now teaching objectives have been agreed on the basis of quality assurance tools (degree course monitoring, course evaluation, graduate surveys, etc.) and parameters supplied by the Federal State (e.g. first-year students, graduates and post-grads), with the involvement of representatives from the faculties, the Presidential Board, the Senate and the central administration. Conclusions are agreed between the Presidential Board and the faculties.

The faculties report at regular intervals on the status of the achievement of objectives, using quality criteria. The results in turn contribute to a new objective agreement process.
The objectives are individual to each faculty and may refer to individual subject areas, the office of the Dean of Studies or the faculty as a whole.
