Consulting Services in Qualitative and Quantitative Methods and Applied Statistics

The Centre for Statistics and the Center of Methods in Social Sciences offer consulting services concerning questions about Qualitative and Quantitative Methods and Applied statistics to students of the University of Göttingen working on their Bachelor or Master thesis. Excluded are Microbiology, Genetics and medical students (who address themselves to the corresponding service by the UMG Göttingen), students from the faculty of psychology (who address themselves to the corresponding service by the Statistics laboratory of psychology) and agriculture students of the Department for Crop Sciences (who address themselves to the corresponding service by Christian Kluth).

The offer from the Centre for Statistics and the Center of Methods in Social Sciences is financed by study quality medium. Depending on the particular problem at hand, students please address themselves to one of the following services:

Center of Methods in Social Sciences: Student Consultation in Qualitative Research
Center of Methods in Social Sciences: Student Consultation in Quantitative Research
Centre for Statictics: Consultation in Applied Statistics

Domain I Qualitative Research

This domain comprises the whole research of a qualitative research project. This includes

  • the support in developing qualitative research designs
  • the consultation on data collection and data processing
  • the consultation on analysis and interpretation
  • the consultation on software issues.

Furthermore, consultation on an appropriate presentation and understanding of qualitative results with particular regard to generalisation and representativeness is provided.

Students having related questions address themselves to the Center of Methods in Social Sciences: Student Consultation in Qualitative Research.

Domain II Quantitative Research Designs

This domain comprises the consultation on planning and conducting empirical research projects. This includes the development of research questions, hypotheses, research goals and the structure empirical research projects as well as the operationalisation of theoretical concepts.
More specifically, students are consulted on questions concerning

  • research design
  • methods of collecting data
  • survey construction
  • sampling methods.

Moreover, the consulting service offers general support on writing empirical research projects as well as on analysing tables and conducting linear regressions.

Students having related questions address themselves to the Center of Methods in Social Sciences: Student Consultation in Quantitative Research.

Domain III Applied Statistics

Building on the services offered in Domain II, this domain comprises consultation on (advanced) statistical analysis methods. Particularly, this includes

  • the choice of an appropriate statistical model and analysis tool for a data set at hand (e.g. generalized linear models, survival analysis, mixed models, nonparametric regression etc.)
  • general questions concerning different kind of data (e.g. cross-sectional data vs. panel data vs. time series data)
  • the choice of an appropriate estimation method (e.g. likelihood vs. bayesian)
  • the implementation of the data analysis in established software packages (Excel, R, Stata, SPSS etc.)
  • the interpretation and presentation of the obtained results.
