EXPLAIN – EXPLaining Ability INtervention

About the Project

Our aim: Promote and Research the explanatory skills of aspiring teachers in business didactics

Explanations hold significant importance for understanding of learning content and occur frequently for extended periods of time within a classroom. In this project, which is a part of the Masters in Business Education in cooperation with the University of Constance (JProj Dr. Stefanie Findeisen), aspiring teachers improve their ability to explain economic concepts in a way that is understandable and appropriate for the target audience. They are recorded and then engage in the analysis of their individual explanation situations along with a partner using vidoe analysis, thus developing research methodological skills. As a result of this project, a digital teaching and learning tool for both students and teachers will be created which can be adapted to various subjects.

Our approch: Design a digital higher education didactic explanation training and investigate its effectiveness within an experimental framework

The ability to explain is assessed longitudinally with the help of an interactive video simulation, wherein aspiring teachers explain concepts of various subjects to the learners. Between the two data collection points, students receive intervention training during the semester. On the research front, the seminar design is used to investigate the extent to which the explanatory abilities of the aspiring teachers can be learned during their studies and transferred to new situations. Factors promoting the development of explanatory skills and the ultimate impact of teachers' explanatory abilities on learners' comprehension are also investigated. Findings on these fundamental questions are crucial for assessing the development of explanatory proficiency and its significance for learners' comprehension, as well as for promoting them in teacher training.
