Prof. Dr. Tine Stein has been accepted as a Permanent Fellow at the Integrative Research Institute for Law & Society (LSI) at Humboldt University in Berlin. The LSI brings together interdisciplinary research on the interactions between law and society and connects researchers from different disciplines.

Dr. Verena Frick successfully completes habilitation process (07.2025)

On July 2, Dr. Verena Frick successfully completed her habilitation procedure with a trial lecture. This was preceded by a specialist lecture and the successfully reviewed habilitation thesis on "The Democratic City." The Faculty of Social Sciences at Georg August University of Göttingen has awarded her the title of private lecturer with venia legendi in political science. The Political Theory and History of Ideas department warmly congratulates PD Dr. Frick on her habilitation.

University Association Dissertation Award for Dr. Tobias Adler-Bartels (06.2025)

The University Association of Göttingen has awarded the 2024 Dissertation Prize to Dr. Tobias Adler-Bartels for his dissertation on "Radical Conservatism and the Liberal Question – Morphology and Radicalization of Conservative Ideology in Germany from the Vormärz to the Weimar Republic." The prize is endowed with EUR 5,000. His work was selected as one of two outstanding dissertations university-wide. In addition to Dr. Adler-Bartels, Dr. Shayan Hundrieser from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science also received the award. The award ceremony is planned to take place during the 2025 Academic Year Celebration. The Political Theory and History of Ideas department congratulates Dr. Adler-Bartels on this special award.

Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksiy Makeyev in Göttingen (01.2025)

On January 24, 2025, a group of interested students and lecturers from the University of Göttingen studying sociology, political science, and international law met with the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Oleksij Makejew. The ambassador had several appointments in Göttingen and the surrounding area that day, which were arranged by Viola von Cramon, former member of the German Bundestag and former member of the European Parliament, and he was happy to accept the invitation from the Institute of Political Science. Moderated by Prof. Tine Stein, the ambassador willingly answered questions from students and faculty. The topics discussed included aspects of the conditions for the success of sanctions policy, democratic self-government in Ukraine, the German population's willingness to support Ukraine, and how politics can raise awareness of the "turning point." The audience thanked Ambassador Makeyev with loud applause for taking the time to participate in the discussion and for explaining his positions and perspectives.

Dr. Sven Altenburger honored for dissertation (11/2024)

On November 29, 2024, our former chair staff member Dr. Sven Altenburger received an award for the best dissertation in the doctoral program in social sciences during the 2024 academic ceremony of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Georg August University of Göttingen. He shares the prize with Lucas Cé Sangalli. The ceremony was opened by Vice President for Academic Affairs Prof. Dr. Max Wardetzky and Prof. Dr. Tine Stein. Prof. Dr. Theres Matthieß then gave the keynote speech. The ceremony was accompanied by music from the duo "Entre-Nous."

On July 16, Tobias Adler-Bartels successfully defended his dissertation "Radical Conservatism and the Liberal Question – Morphology and Radicalization of Conservative Ideology in Germany from the Vormärz to the Weimar Republic" in a public defense. In addition to his primary supervisor Tine Stein, the examination committee also included Prof. Dr. Hubertus Buchstein (University of Greifswald) and Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Knelangen (CAU Kiel).

Discussion round in Slovakia (May 2024)

May 7, 2024 | Study trip organized by the Hans Böckler Foundation

On May 7, Campbell MacGillivray moderated a discussion panel with Professor Emília Sičáková-Beblavá (Institute of Public Policy, Comenius University) and Dr. Max Steuer (Department of Political Science, Comenius University and 'Talking Courts' project coordinator). The discussion, held before a multidisciplinary audience of scholarship holders, covered a wide range of topics, including the recent history of Slovakia and the effects of non-democratic practices, the founding of the Slovak Republic in 1993 after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the impact of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia on the text and practice of the Slovak constitution, and the implementation of government policy since then.

Dr. Nicolás Fraile from Argentina as a visiting scholar at the department (01.2024)

In December 2023 and January 2024, Dr. Nicolás Fraile from the University of Buenos Aires - Gino Germani Research Institute (Department of Political Theory) was a guest at the Department of Political Theory and History of Ideas. Dr. Fraile's research focuses on democratic theory and political theory, in particular Weimar political theory and the compatibility of public administration and democracy. In Göttingen, he presented the results of his dissertation on Hermann Heller and the problem of political unity and conducted research in the extensive archives of the Göttingen State and University Library. He also discussed current political developments in Argentina with students as part of PD Dr. Martin Beckstein's seminar "Theories of Democratic Regression."

On April 24, 2023, Sven Altenburger successfully defended his dissertation (Contributing to the Commonwealth. Civic Duties in Modern Germany and the United States). The examination committee consisted of Prof. Tine Stein, Prof. Dario Castiglione (Exeter), and Prof. Marcus Llanque (Augsburg). On January 18 of this year, André Rathfelder successfully defended his dissertation (Auf der Suche nach Zukunft – Das ökologische politische Denken im deutschsprachigen Raum). The examination committee consisted of Prof. Tine Stein, Prof. Konrad Ott (Kiel), and PD Dr. Klaus Detterbeck (Göttingen).

German-Italian conference at Villa Vigoni: "How many faces does sovereignty have?" (May 2022)

Verena Frick and Fernando D'Aniello (Università Federico II Napoli) are organizing a German-Italian conference on the topic "How many faces does sovereignty have?/ Quante facce ha la sovranità?". The basic idea behind this interdisciplinary discussion is to use the case law of the Federal Constitutional Court as a starting point for a fundamental reassessment of the future and present of the idea of sovereignty in Europe. To this end, representatives from both countries from the fields of political theory and philosophy will engage in discussion with legal experts. The conference program can be found here.

Conference "Basic Political Concepts in the 21st Century" (06.2021)

June 3 and 4, 2021 | Georg August University of Göttingen

On June 3 and 4, the conference "Basic Political Concepts in the 21st Century," organized by the Political Theory and History of Ideas department, took place as a digital event. Eight panels with a total of seventeen presentations and two keynotes were planned. While the first day was devoted to historical and methodological perspectives, on the second day we dealt with political-theoretical controversies and the basic concepts discussed in them. DVPW Perspective Conference "Interdisciplinary Research" (11/2019)

Verena Frick, together with Anna Fruhstorfer, Sebastian Huhnholz, Oliver W. Lembcke, and Sebastian Wolf, is organizing this year's first DVPW Perspective Conference. The conference on the topic of "Interdisciplinary Research – Opportunity or Risk for Young Academics" will take place on November 7–8, 2019, in Berlin. All interested parties are welcome to attend! Two new DFG projects (fall 2019)

Tine Stein has secured two projects from the DFG on the topic of "Politics and Ethics of Finitude," which will examine the ecological transformation of society from a political theory perspective. One research project focuses on initiatives such as urban gardening and citizen energy cooperatives, while the other focuses on the critique of growth in ecological-political thinking.

Symposium on "Heavenly Sources" (04.2019)

On Friday, April 12, 2019, a symposium on Tine Stein's work "Heavenly Sources and Earthly Law: Religious Prerequisites of the Liberal Constitutional State" took place at the Institute for Hermeneutics and Philosophy of Religion at the Faculty of Theology in Zurich (CH). "Trust in Democracy" (04.2019)

The German Bishops' Conference and the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) have commissioned a working group to draft a new Joint Statement on the current crisis of democracy. Tine Stein is a member of this working group. At a press conference on April 11, 2019, she, together with Reiner Anselm (Munich/EKD), Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck (Essen), and Eva Senghaas-Knobloch (Bremen) presented the new Joint Statement "Trust in Democracy" on April 11, 2019, at the Catholic Academy in Berlin (Hannoversche Str. 5). For the special issue "1968 – 50 Years Later" of the journal Der Landtag (parliamentary journal for Schleswig-Holstein), Tobias Adler-Bartels gave an interview on questions of the similarities and differences between the "68ers" and the New Right or radical conservative circles. The issue can be downloaded here.
