The Best Young Researchers, Top-Level Scientists and International Networks

Winning the best young researchers, retaining top-level scientists, developing international networks, and intensifying the collaboration with non-university research institutions: These are the main aims of the Göttingen concept for the future promoted in the first programme phase of the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments. In a film (2009) shown on the DFG video portal scientists of Göttingen University present the successful implementation.

Göttingen Graduate School in DFG Video Portal

The Göttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences is promoted in the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments since November 2007. It counts more than 350 PhD students and 180 faculty members, including a Nobel Prize laureate and several Leibniz prize awardees. The graduate school is based on the cooperation between six faculties of the University of Göttingen, three Max Planck Institutes, and the German Primate Center. In total, 12 different PhD programs are united under the roof of the GGNB. The video (2009) presents the Graduate School and the daily life of the PhD Students.

Excellence Initiative: Molecular Microscopy for Brain Research

The human brain is probably the most complex structure that nature has ever brought forth. All functions, like learning, remembering, perceiving and feeling, are ultimately controlled by molecules. The molecular processes in the nerve cells can be studied only with high-resolution microscopes. The newly developed STED microscopy now enables biologists to observe structures in living cells on the nanometer scale. The video (2009) presents the Cluster and research projects.
