University Glossary German/English

The University Glossary contains German terms and their English equivalents or explanations. These include both terms specific to the University of Göttingen (eg names of individual institutes or faculties) and terms that may be used elsewhere (eg in general administration or by funders such as the DFG).

The Glossary is designed to provide clear, useful translations and explanations to aid communications with international staff and students (both inside and outside the University), improve research grant applications, and correct common errors. The legally binding term is always the German term. The English equivalents and explanations are provided for informational purposes.

Please use the glossary as an initial reference point or as support for AI-supported translations. It can be used alongside our English Usage Style Guide and the University’s German/English DeepL translation service which, wherever possible, includes words from the University Glossary. Please refer external translation agencies to these tools.

The Glossary contains many terms, but not everything that you may need for your work. Feel free to send queries to Melissa Sollich (Public Relations,

Note: It is not always necessary. For example, "Abteilung Göttingen International" is translated to "Göttingen International". Translation of Abteilung could be team or group or it could be left out (as in the example here with Göttingen International).
