Press release: Prize for outstanding contributions to Sino-German collaboration

Prof. Jianbin Wang conferred Göttingen University's Medal Aureus Gottingensis

(pug) The Chinese scholar and interpreter Prof. Jianbin Wang has been awarded Göttingen University's Medal Aureus Gottingensis. With this award, the University honours him for his outstanding contributions to Sino-German collaboration. The medal was handed over as part of the university's Sino-German Festivities this month."Over the past years, Prof. Wang has proven his excellent dedication to promoting relations between the University of Göttingen and the Beijing Foreign Studies University; he also played a major role in setting up the Academic Confucius Institute at Göttingen University,“ Prof. Hiltraud Casper-Hehne, Göttingen University's Vice President of International Affairs, expressed her praise. "He has been involved in innumerable talks and contractual negotiations and mediated between the partners. It is to him we owe thanks for Hanban ultimately agreeing to the wishes of the Göttingen and Chinese partner universities.“

Jianbin Wang, born in 1964, is Professor of Translatology and Vice-Dean of the German Department at the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). He ranks among China's most prominent interpreters and translators and has worked for the likes of Angela Merkel, Gerhard Schröder and Johannes Rau in this respect. After his studies of German and translation theory and practice, he worked as head translator and interpreter for the Department of International Co-operation of the Chinese Ministry of Education. From 1991 to 1996, he completed his doctoral studies at the University of Heidelberg. Since 1997, he has held the Chair in General Translatology at BFSU.

With the university medal Aureus Gottingensis, Göttingen University has been honouring persons who make outstanding contributions to the University since 1965. Alongside Erich Biederbeck, Prof. Emil Woermann, Heinz Hilpert, Hildegunde Willrich, Sigrid Lüttge and Lars Ellegaard, Prof. Wang is now the seventh person upon whom this medal has been conferred.
