Internationally recognised tests
Necessary knowledge of English without proficiency in German
Applicants whose mother tongue is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Proof of adequate proficiency in English must be provided in the form of standardised or accredited certificates. These should be at least at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe (CEFR):
- UNIcert®: mind. Zertifikat UNIcert® III;
- NULTE-Zertifikate: at least level C1;
- Cambridge English Scale: at least 180 points;
- „International English Language Testing System” (IELTS Academic): at least Band 6.5;
- „Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test” (TOEFL iBT): at least 93 points;
- Global Scale of English (Pearson Academic): at least 76 points.
- other proof at level C1 or higher according to CEFR
Successful completion of a test must not be more than three years prior to the date of your application for admission. Proof of adequate proficiency in the English language can also be provided by successfully completing a course of study in which English proficiency at CEFR level C1 or higher is specified as an accredited competence objective in the Diploma Supplement. Proficiency in German ist not required.
Prove of sufficient proficiency in English with proficiency in German
Applicants who have a very good proficiency in German must provide evidence of a sufficient proficiency in English.
Applicants whose first language is not German and who have neither a German university entrance qualification nor a Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification from a German university in a German-language degree programme must prove that they have a very good proficiency in German in accordance with the "Prüfungsordnung für die Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerberinnen und Studienbewerber" (DSH) by taking an examination with the overall result DSH-2.
Exempted from the requirement to take a test are applicants who are exempted according to the "Prüfungsordnung für die Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerberinnen und Studienbewerber" (DSH) at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen; this applies in particular to those applicants who have proven the required proficiency of the German language by passing the "Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache" (TestDaF) with at least four times TestDaF level 4 (TDN 4) or by passing the "Prüfungsteil Deutsch" of the "Feststellungsprüfung" at a German preparatory college.
Applicants whose mother tongue is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Proof of adequate proficiency in English must be provided in the form of standardised or accredited certificates. These should be at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe (CEFR):
- UNIcert®: mind. Zertifikat UNIcert® II;
- NULTE-Zertifikate: at least level B2;
- Cambridge English Scale: at least 160 points;
- „International English Language Testing System” (IELTS Academic): at least Band 5.5;
- „Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test” (TOEFL iBT): at least 59 points;
- Global Scale of English (Pearson Academic): at least 59 points;
- other proof at level B2 or higher according to CEFR
Successful completion of a test must not be more than three years prior to the date of your application for admission. Applicants who have spent at least one year studying or working in an English-speaking country or have completed an at least two-year study programme taught in English during the three years prior to the submission of their admissions application (date received) are exempt from this requirement.
