W2 Professorship with tenure track to W3 in Materials Physics

Institution: Faculty of Physics, Institute for Materials Physics
Date of Announcement: 10.04.2025
Application Deadline: 25.05.2025

The Faculty of Physics at the University of Göttingen invites applications for a temporary professorship with civil servant status (grade W2 NBesO) with tenure track (grade W3 NBesO) at the Institute for Materials Physics effective at the earliest possible date:

W2 Professorship with tenure track to W3 in Materials Physics (f/m/d)

The successful candidate will initially be appointed for a period of five years. After positive evaluation, transfer to a permanent professorship (W3) will take place without the position being readvertised.

We are looking for a team-oriented and committed colleague, who conducts outstanding research and teaching and has a high potential for groundbreaking results in internationally visible projects. We expect a relevant participation in teaching and further developing the undergraduate and research-oriented teaching in physics and in graduate training.

The candidate will be expected to participate in collaborative research projects that are currently being established and will perform research and teaching in the field of experimental materials physics.

Possible scientific focus areas should include:

  • Thermodynamics and kinetics of novel materials whose macroscopic properties are governed by quantum phenomena, such as strongly correlated materials, hybrid materials, materials with non-trivial topology, and 2D materials.
  • Investigation of current challenges in materials physics, ideally related to non-equilibrium processes, metastable states, or energy conversion.
  • Exploration of structure-property relationships in novel materials using high-resolution microscopy techniques.

Ideally, the primary research focus should complement existing projects in Göttingen. The Göttingen Campus, with its diverse and dynamic research environment, offers various ongoing and planned research network initiatives that provide ample opportunities for collaboration and innovation.

Appointment requirements are stipulated by Article 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act in the most current version of that law. As a rule, junior professors and other members of the University of Göttingen can only be considered for a professorial appointment if after the completion of the doctoral thesis they have transferred to another university or worked for a minimum of two years in research elsewhere. The University of Göttingen is a Public Law Foundation and thereby entitled to award professorships. Details will be provided upon request.

Applications from abroad are explicitly welcome. The University of Göttingen strives to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and therefore explicitly invites qualified female scholars to apply. The University has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports its employees in balancing work and family life. The University is particularly committed to the professional participation of disabled employees and therefore welcomes applications from persons with disabilities. In the case of equivalent qualifications, applications from disabled persons will be given preference. In order for the University to be able to protect the interests of the applicant, information about a disability or equal status should be included in the application.

Applications should include a curriculum vitae, certificates, a list of publications, a list of your teaching activity, a brief outlook on your future research and how your research complements the scientific environment of solid state physics and materials physics at the University of Göttingen, as well as a list of your acquired third-party funds. Please submit your application exclusively via our application portal addressing it to the Dean of the Faculty of Physics, Prof. Dr. Sarah Köster, no later than May 25, 2025.

If you have further questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Thomas Weitz, I. Institute of Physics (thomas.weitz@uni-goettingen.de).

The submission of the application constitutes consent under the data protection law and allows us to process your application data. For more details on the legal basis and data use, please refer to the information sheet on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
