W3 Professorship in Wood Science

Institution: Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology
Date of Announcement: 13.05.2026
Application Deadline: 24.06.2026

The Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology invites applications for a permanent professorship with civil servant status (grade W3 NBesO) effective at the earliest possible date:

W3 Professorship in Wood Science (f/m/d)

The professorship will be expected to represent the entire range of wood science in research and teaching with a focus on solid wood research and at the same time strengthen the link between wood science and forestry research in the faculty. The professorship will substantially strengthen the research foci of the faculty “Sustainable multifunctional use and management of forests” and “Forests in transformation”.

With regard to teaching, the holder of the position will assume the following tasks: Subject-specific contributions in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes of the faculty, mainly in the Master’s programme “Wood Biology and Wood Technology”. The courses must be partially held in English due to the international profile of the professorship and the students. Nevertheless, very good knowledge of German is essential due to the high number of classes to be held in German. The post-holder will be expected to actively contribute to the further internationalisation, the curricular development of the teaching programme, as well as to the quality assurance of the study programme. The University of Göttingen values research-oriented teaching.

We are looking for a committed and team-oriented colleague with a strong research and leadership profile. Their scientific expertise and visibility in solid wood research should have been proven by a strong publication record in international peer-reviewed journals and successful third-party acquisition. They should further present a convincing plan to combine the perspective of wood science with the existing expertise in forest sciences to initiate joint research projects. In addition, we expect the extensive infrastructure of the department of Wood Biology and Wood Products to be integrated into the future research of the department. Moreover, applicants should have a wide (international) scientific network and experience in leadership and teaching. The willingness to contribute to the further development of the faculty is essential. Experience in the cooperation with industry partners is desired.

Appointment requirements are stipulated by Article 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act in the most current version of that law. As a rule, junior professors and other members of the University of Göttingen can only be considered for a professorial appointment if after the completion of the doctoral thesis they have transferred to another university or worked for a minimum of two years in research elsewhere. The University of Göttingen is a Public Law Foundation and thereby entitled to award professorships. Details will be provided upon request.

Applications from abroad are explicitly welcome. The University of Göttingen strives to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and therefore explicitly invites qualified female scholars to apply. The University has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports its employees in balancing work and family life. The University is particularly committed to the professional participation of disabled employees and therefore welcomes applications from persons with disabilities. In the case of equivalent qualifications, applications from disabled persons will be given preference. In order for the University to be able to protect the interests of the applicant, information about a disability or equal status should be included in the application.

Your convincing application should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae including your publications, lists of the acquired third-party funding and of the classes held, a research concept (max. 3 pages), a teaching concept (max. 2 pages), as well as a concept regarding equal opportunities and diversity (max. 1 page), your teaching evaluation, and your certificates. Please address your application to the Dean of the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology of the University of Göttingen and send it as a single PDF file to bewerbungen@forst.uni-goettingen.de / application@forst.uni-goettingen.de by June 24, 2026.
