Foyer International
The “Foyer International” was established in the 1960s as a meeting place for international students. It was originally organised as a kind of café where international and German students could meet and talk to each other. Over the years, a simultaneous programme of events was developed as well, which primarily offered information on international topics. In the last few years the programme was changed to concentrate on events designed to promote first and foremost joint activities of participants and thus social interaction between students, as part of the “International Network”.
As an opportunity for student interaction, English, Spanish, French and Italian language workshops have been established at the “Foyer International „under ZESS (Central Institution for Languages and Key Competencies) supervision. The workshops are supervised by ZESS teachers. They are open to all students who wish to improve their skills in the spoken (foreign) language of their choice; in discussions, at presentations, film nights, information nights about specific countries and other activities with native speakers from English-, Spanish-, French- and Italian-speaking countries. Information about other countries is also intended to enhance the understanding of and respect for different cultures, in addition to direct encounters and joint activities. This is why the programme also includes specific topic-related joint leisure activities such as dancing, making music, acting, cooking etc., in addition to the language workshops and information events. In this way, the Foyer International supplements the programme described above, for example with salsa and flamenco dancing courses, creative writing workshops, theatre workshops, national cookery nights and much more, to encourage social interaction between foreign and German students.
Information about the current programme can be found on the homepage of Foyer International or in the printed programme brochure of Foyer International displayed at the University, in the refectories and at the student hostels.
