Teaching
The department deals with university teaching in the areas of forest ergonomics and process engineering. This includes the analysis, evaluation and design of production processes and production systems for the sustainable management and use of forests and landscapes with special consideration of the people involved in the work process.
About the courses
The aim of the "Timber harvesting process" course within the bachelor's degree is to familiarize students with concepts for planning, implementation, monitoring and quality control within secondary (technical) production in the forest. One focus is on possible supply processes for forest wood, taking into account the necessary conditions of use. In this way, the students should not only be able to identify suitable work processes depending on the terrain, location and stock conditions and to calculate the costs for wood provision, but also be able to assess different processes with regard to occupational safety and their ecological effects . A second focus in the basic course is forest development, which represents the basis and the first step of regulated forest management. The students deal with current concepts for the analysis of development systems in the forest together with planning processes for basic and detailed development and their implementation. In addition, organizational concepts for road maintenance are being developed.
In the master’s program, topics from the areas of process engineering are dealt with, particularly in the specialization “Forest Management and Forest Use”, which prepares, among other things, for a management position in a forest company. Methods for the sustainable supply of logs are also the focus of the course in the Tropical and International Forestry course. Likewise, students with other specializations can deepen their knowledge of ergonomics, wood harvesting and forest technology in various elective modules. The external seminars for practical case studies carried out by the department in cooperation with the forestry education centers of the state forest administrations, especially in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, are of great importance.
